Andrew Plylar enjoys discussing how Louisiana’s Spanish, French, African and Native American cultural influences come together to make Louisiana what it is.
As a lifelong student of the state’s history, Andrew Plylar views Louisiana’s modern makeup as less of a melting pot and more of a perfect mosaic.
Jazz Music
When tasked with curating a soundtrack for Louisiana, Andrew Plylar gravitates towards jazz music. Today, Louisiana’s jazz music scene is just as rich and vibrant as it was in the early 1900s. For many, Louisiana is the one true home of jazz. Formerly described as “ragtime” and “hot music,” jazz was ingrained in the state’s fabric long before it had an official name. Although the genre officially rose to prominence in the 1910s, the first popular jazz musician took to the public with his tunes in the 190s. This musician, Buddy Bolden, continues to be remembered as a pioneer of New Orleans style.
